Yep, around my house,Halloween is always such a big deal with the fall scenes. Ya know hay bails with potted mums and a scarecrow and an assortment of pumpkins and decorative gourdes. We light up the front porch with black lights and a strobe and make various little halloween goodies with sheets and plastic varmints the dollar store allows. Then of course the sound must be there, provided by walmart and my kid's cd player.
Alas, this year i'm afraid i must be a spectator,because of this damnable bronchitis! I hate that, but all well, the cookie didn't crumble my way!
My twins will put all of their creative little twisted energy into it, and I'll watch sipping coffee, @ 17 they think they are too old to trick or treat anyway. I'm sure they will be able to scare the neighborhood kids in the fun and festive spirit of the evening.. I wish we were little farther north, as halloween eve. is supposed to be 85* and quite muggy! In Fla. there is no crisp wind or multi-colored leaves and you must take apart your pretty fall scenes before the pumpkins rot due/to the heat and the hay become mildewed!

Ha! I just left a Halloweenie post in "Pop The Cherries" thread. Love Halloween, but kinda wish young adults would back off from turning it into primarily a bacchanalia for them. But then I did my share back then. Still, it's so much more fun seeing the kidlings trick or treat than it is to see a 25-ish guy try not to puke on his Dr. Frank N. Furter platform boots.
At home I'm usually the "Door Man", and maybe I'll put an eyepatch on or something like that. While I wait between groups of kids I love watching the true greats, the classic old scary movies on Halloween, like the original "Frankenstein", "Dracula" and "Wolfman". Don't usually like modern gore-fests. I can't recommend highly enough a little-known 1932 movie by James Whale, the director of the original "Frankenstein" - it's "The Old Dark House", about travelers in a wild and rural part of Wales forced by floods and storms to take shelter in the dark old estate house of an Boris Karloff, Charles Laughton, Raymond Massey, Melvin Douglas...and Gloria Stuart, who 65 years later played "Elderly Rose" in "Titanic". She was absolutely gorgeous in 1932. The movie has satanists, religious zealots, savagely mutilated mute servants, locked-away murderous lunatics, and love of course. You can find it on You Tube if you want to watch in 10 parts on a monitor.
Two movies IMO deserve special recognition. "Ed Wood" is really not a horror film, but is a Tim Burton biopic about the 50's purveyor of some of the worst movies in history. I found it surprisingly funny and moving, as it deals not only with Woods movies and personal struggles, but with his close relationship with the elderly and morphine-addicted Bela Lugosi. Great cast, with Johnny Depp, Martin Landau, Patricia Arwuette, Sarah Jessica Parker, Jeffry Jones and Bill Murray. Oops, make that "three movies that deserve sepcial recognition", because I just thought of "The Ninth Gate". Now this is a serious movie, directed by Roman Polanski, who is probably a child rapist and liar, but it is also a pretty good director. "Ninth Gate" is more suspense than horror. Doesn't really have gore, but it is to me more frightening, becasue it deals very convincingly with modern Satanists and the search for a book....supposed to be written by Lucifer himself! I find it truly spooky, and wonderfully acted primarily by Johnny Depp (I'm a Depp fan as you can see), Frank Langella and Lena Olin. Oh heck, that reminds of me of two other spooky Depp movies: the tongue-in-cheek "Sleepy Hollow"!, and the seriously scary Ripper tale of "From Hell". Throw in "Secret Window" and I think we can say Depp likes doing spooky movies.
But finally, the greatest, the "one movie to rule them all", that wonderful modern classic, "Young Frankenstein" is just marvellous. Simply silly fun and hilarious to me.

ummm think Alice might be a spammer... and Halloween came and went for us old folks. Where we used to live we would get 100+ trick or treaters in all shapes and sizes. Where we live now... zero. Kind of takes the fun out of it now.
