i have noticed that when a patient opts for the surgical removal of their pal,it is much more traumatic than home removals.it tends to leave a gaping wound that requires stitches.Home removals leave only a tiny wound(usually),that will heal all on it's ownsome, as well as being much more entertaining for us viewers.
any thoughts?

I too have felt exactly the same way. Not a doctor, but surgery seems too tedious and then having to sew. If I were, I would still be inclined to evacuate, destroy the sac and apply a simple dressing. But, I guess they have their reasons.

I think the Doc.s wanted to ,,Play Safe,, Once you have a bigger Cut you have more sight of the inside , where the cyst is. Most of the time ,I think they want to pull out the cyst in one piece, undammaged.....They do not care about the ,,Splurch,, We on the other hand want to keep the pressure, little cut is more pressure and therefore a pressurised ,,Splurch,,

I guess medically that makes sense.

Docs like to have a wide arena, they like to see everything, and insert their whole hand if need be. Most of us know the pain from surg. is 85% organ manipulation. When I was in a md's office he rushed in, quickly made the incision (still considered a surgical incision, and beyond a nurses scope of practice! tee-hee right?) anyway a quick the nursewillfinishup, bye! and we did the rest, I know Doc. couldn't tolerate the anticipated aroma! They do ,in my opinion, start large in order to save time. Laid out on the table, so to speak. I don't agree to the point it's probably unethical, but there ya go.

dunno about other countries, but here in the UK,where we have free healthcare, most people go to a doc for such things cos they have blind faith in the medical profession.Where cost is an issue,I expect you are more likely for people to at least attempt dealing with it first.

But thats another issue, thats about having the money, Do you live in a country with good Medic.healthCare, .....the isseu was, the big wound&stiched up when seek Medical atention, and the DIY-Job gives a more tiny wound thats healing faster, all on its ownsome.

I squeezed out a deeply embedded zit on a friend's back; his doctor told him after looking at that he would need "surgery". I squeezed it out; it has stayed clean and has not filled up. He was so grateful to me for having helped him avoid "surgery". Of course, it wasn't a cyst. The thing we don't know about the vids we see is what happens after a non-hygienic home removal. We don't know how often infection occurs or doesn't.

And you didnt put that on Vid. for us ????

I have mixed feelings about this subject. I am a doctor...so I am on the side of sterile procedures. But I see in the vids that most of the dr.'s make un-necessary large incisions and they play around with it too much. I am sure they are just being careful. I've also seen home removals that were hygenic and much more thorough with just a smaller cut. The patient also seems to tolerate the procedure better. And in most of the vids...a small bandaid or bandage was all that was needed to close the wound. I've also cringed at watching someone remove a zit or cyst with dirty fingernails. I guess it comes down to what the patient wants to do. (BTW...I work in a morgue so I do not practice medicine on live people and never have)

No offense intended Spooky. Most nurses learn aseptic technique in school. Sebaceous cysts are usually that, just a sack full of oil. Keep it clean, usually no need for atb. in Docs. office we did all our own cultures (of course he ordered them) then we simply wrote the least expensive most effective med. Doc was very busy and hated to sweat the simple stuff if he could get by with it. Have to admit makes for great continuity and team work, and I like it like that. Can't wait to get back to the small country practitioners

i expect most trained nurses are capable of undertaking such a procedure, providing it is not in a risky place(on the body). These days, nurses are being given more and more responsibility.Docs seem to make the decisions and just do the higher risk procedures.
But back to the main topic, even though we have nationalised free healthcare,I would choose to have a cyst dealt with at home,by a knowledgeable other, than wind up with a big scar from seeing a doctor to have it dealt with.Posted 6 months ago # -
Mothereruption...no offense taken. I see your point completely. And I agree...I would love to see more country practioners.
I never gave it much thought before...but I was watching a few "home surgery" vids on youtube...the people performing the "home surgery" in all of them happen to be nurses. And they...in my opinion...did an excellent job. I guess I was so amazed at the procedures that it never occurred to me that the person performing them may have either worked in the medical field or had medical training. Or I just didn't pay attention to that fact.

Hey Spooky! Do you know Dr. G. from the TV show "Dr. G. Medical Examiner" on Discovery Health channel? lol I love that show! You docs have to be pretty darn intelligent to figure out how some people died!
Posted 6 months ago # -
@ Spooky....If you have a body laying on your Table for investigation, examination....and you find a BigFat Cyst or a Biiiigggg Blackhead on that body, and no-one is around at that time.....Can You resist ??? ............. be honest, I mean you have all the tools there, and the ,,patient,, wont be in pain. Seems Soooo easy then. And IF you do...sometimes, please can you make us a Video ?? & Post..in secret ofcourse, use an alias

Hey what about Cyster's suggestion? i know HIPPA must stick their nosy noses in your work as well, but I bet you could run into some good opportunities! Keep us updated..
