He had been blown out of his foxhole twice on this day and had left the leg some where north of the DMZ,(His Story). He was constantly picking shrapnel out of his stump with his pocket knife which he had &quot;sterilized&quot; in rubbing alcohol and used Old Grand Dad 100 proof Bourbon as an anesthetic. He did this procedure one time too many and the end of the stump got infected so bad that it split open at the very bottom. The Marine doctor&#39;s had left his stump about 3-4 inches too long. The VA docs said that was the only good thing about this surgery. It took my friend one year to get back to his type of normal. So your friend&#39;s doctor is looking out for his best interest. Remember, your friend&#39;s stump is just like a foot in a shoe, it&#39;s exposed to all kinds of funk and fungus and has to be cared for properly.</p> <p>(BTW, my friend died in an auto accident in &#39;81.
