For those of you scratching your heads as to what “daughters” are, I shall explain… and I’ll try and be brief! (lol!)

Hydatid disease or cysts, also known as Echinococcosis, is caused by the larval stages of tapeworms. Tapeworms are parasitic worms that are found in humans, dogs and sheep. The larval cysts or brood capsules can also contain several smaller cysts, known as daughter cysts. And that is about as simple as it comes. ;)

For those of you wishing to know more – here is the Wikipedia link: “Hydatid Cysts” There is even a really cool graphic showing the life cycle of the parasitic tapeworm.

This video shows two hydatid cysts being drained, opened, and the germative membrane removed. The second cyst contains many daughter cysts of several varied sizes. But they all get sucked up by the powerful endoscopic… sucking tool. I’m sure it has some long technical name, but call it as you see it; its a medical tool that sucks. Oh wait, it does also squirt fluid too. Let’s amend the name then… the “Suck and Squirt Tool.”

So Dripper is off to a pain management centre, and I’ve been spending my month working on my Master’s in Victoria (on Vancouver Island, most beautiful place on earth). One of my classmates is a Thoracic Surgeon, so I decided to look up what he must do.

I’ll bet you want to know what this is, eh? Me too. YT description is no help. It says something about “t’s congenital pathology of the mediastinum. It’s atypical localized cyst like bone and hair with organic mass in it”, and elsewhere it says that these are dermoid cysts.

FYI: The video is actually comprised of three different Thoracic surgeries, all cysts. The first is a dermoid, the second is cyst of the pericardium, and the third is a Hydadtid cyst. Great, great find, Sjhamn!
