Been a while since we did see some Bot-Larvae jumping outta Dog-Flesh, So I thought lets get out hunting for a nice one, and in fact I found 2 !! Only 1 Dog, but the poor puppy does have 2 of them in its Fur.

The Gambian Clinic, now famous on PTZ for removing lots and lots of nasty, disgusting, almost epidemic proportions (for the dogs anyways) of Cordylobia Arthropophaga… aka… Mango Worms! (ewww! yuck! gross!)

With 5-10 cases per week, they do see a lot of puppies, who are more of an easy target for these parasites due to the fact that they sleep a lot, are on the ground and sometimes roll in their own feces before their mother can clean them up. That is just the nature of puppies not raised in an antiseptic, clean environment. In Gambia, many dogs are not just pets to any one family, but of a village, and everyone helps out with their care.

I am sure that this pup and siblings will be well cared for with preventative medicines, so this issue does not recur. Plus, the actual number of worms is few, and one of them removed on the video was quite small, telling me that this pup’s problem was caught early on – thankfully!

Pleasantly, there is very little whimpering on the part of this sweetie pie (else I would not have posted it, trust me here). So, for those who are okay with watching this adorable puppy,

I am not sure if it’s a botfly in this kittens cheek or what, but whatever it is it’s huge! I gasped the first time I saw it and almost cried because I felt bad for the little one. But thank god the kitten was adopted out into a good loving home afterwards

I got some interesting information about Mangoworms, from the vet who posted this video, that I thought would be great to share here:

Q: Can a dog die from this?
A: “If it comes to this massive infestation they do die of it, yes. But in general adult dogs don’t get that bad. Puppies are always at risk for massive infestations with follow up problems as they don’t move around too much and lay in there own contamination.”

Q: Are there preventative measures?
A: “Yes, you can protect the animal by using Avermectins. I generally use Ivermectin s.c. but Selamectin or Moxidectin spot-on works well, too. It protects for 3-6weeks against new infestations. Once the maggots are inside you have to remove them manually.”

Q: How many times do you see this, weekly or monthly?
A: “I see this 5-10x every week.”

Definitely not a bedtime story for the little ones! Looks as if there were two botfly extractions but the first one wasn’t filmed. Poor little fella – bet he feels lots better.
