Got Gout Get It Out!

This is gross and I can’t imagine the kind of pain this person is in. I dont know what its caused from, someone once told me too much red meat, but I had a blood test 2 years ago with a trace of it in my blood work. Who knows but this is short and kinda interesting!

I have never heard of gout presenting like that! Gout is pain in usually the toe joints caused by an increase in uric acid in the blood. red meats can cause a gout attack and it is very painful when it happens. I have heard doctors say that if it walks on hooves, it is bad for gout. If it swims or flies (all poultry is included) then is is good for gout. There are also medications to reduce the uric acid in the blood.

My b.i.l. gets really bad bouts of gout, they are usually brought on by his excessive drinking or by eating too much red meat. I have NEVER EVER heard of gout having to be cut out however. He just takes his meds, stays off of his feet as much as possible, and it slowly goes away. That was weird and icky looking.

Wikipedia article on Gout; who happens to an old acquaintance of mine:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gout#Cause

In a nutshell, these are the major contributing factors:

    Lifestyle:
    •Alcohol
•fructose sweetened drinks (yep, put that Mountain Dew down, RIGHT NOW!)
•Meat (processed meats such as lunchmeat are even worse.)
    •Seafood (especially shellfish)

    Medical Conditions:
•Metabolic sydrome (abdominal obesity, hypertension, insulin resistance, abnormal lipid levels)
    •polycythemia
    •lead poisoning
    •kidney failure
    •hemolytic anemia
    •psoriasis
•people that have had organ translplants
    •surgery
    •BMI of 35 or greater

Medications that can increase risk of Gout:
    •Diuretics
    •Niacin
    •aspirin
    •Cyclosporine
    •Ciclosporin
    •Tacrolimus

OK, so it was a big nut! :) I have to deal with most of these contributing factors, plus Type II diabetes; I just don’t want anyone else out there to suffer through what the person in the video did, or what I’ve had do deal with when I have a gout flare.

Ive had gout for about 6 years. Started as a swollen right big toe. Thought it was bad sprain at first. Take the worst physical pain you have ever had, and times it by ten. Its excoriating. You dont want it. I take Colchicine to help fight any excerbations. Red meat, red wine and alcohol, beans, and shellfish are especially bad, and any darkly colored fruits. Like cherries. Its a total diet changer.

Usually the gout curds are whiter than that. Sometimes it does need to be cut out. Sometimes you can’t tell it is gout on a joint like an elbow until they go in and see all this white cottage cheese stuff and then they get diagnosed with it. Most people don’t require this treatment but it doesn’t have a smell because it’s not an infection, it’s an over abundance of uric acid.

Mensch, I’m so sorry some of you suffer from that horribleness!!! Please take care.

@ Fuzzybeard2016 I’m glad you gave all the details. I’m obese, and I need every motivation I can get to stay on my food plan! This site is very good for that.

Oh, yeah. General fyi: the word is diabetic blood sugar levels do equal boil-like infections. Remember that guy on here who said his doctor had told him he got his boil because of his diabetes? I met a guy in real life who told me all about how he keeps getting infections from certain type of bacteria (with a ridiculously long name, he said. MRSA? MSSA?). The strain thrives on byproducts of metabolized sugar. Or something like that.

AAAAAACK!! OMG that looks so painful!!

I’ve seen lots of patients and a few friends with gout, but never seen anything like that develop. Even a mild case of gout is excruciating. The uric acid crystals that form in the joint fluid cause severe pain.

When my blood work came back showing I had signs of gout I really didn’t know what it meant. But since then it has not been detected. It can come and go? my index finger hurts like crazy when I type too much…could that be it?

  • Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

@dripper: If you had it in your finger you would not be typing or surfing . It feels like you got broken glass in your joint(s).

Dripper, it might be gout. I’ve had gout for years at varying degrees. When it’s really bad, it’s bright red and painful to any touch. When it’s not too bad it’s a duller pain like you’re pressing on a bruise and might not hurt much when you’re not using it. In any case, you should have it looked at because it can cause damage to the joint.

I’m a bit surprised gout isn’t more common nowadays. It used to be known as the ‘rich mans disease’ since really only the rich had a high enough amount of fruit in their diet (nearly the only source of sugar in the diet for a very long time). Fructose produces uric acid when it is broken down by the liver (has to be broken down there, nothing else in your body can use it directly). The amount of fructose in the diets of americans has skyrocketed since the 1980s because the American Heart Association refused to admit they didn’t know enough to make sweeping policy decisions. They wanted to end heart disease by much reducing peoples intake of fat. Well, they succeeded… in reducing our fat intake. It’s down about 15% since the early 80s. The problem is, you take out fat and everything tastes like cardboard. So they substituted sugar and high fructose corn syrup (which is actually the exact same amount of glucose and fructose, just with a slightly different (exceptionally weak, broken down by saliva) bonds) and added loads of salt. So now we take in far more calories, and a massively larger amount of fructose. Since I didn’t want to cut out soda, I cut out red meat from my diet to try to reduce my risk personally, and reduced my calorie intake overall a bit. I’m surprised, though, that the abundance of fructose added to EVERYTHING nowadays doesn’t make gout extremely common. I really hope that doesn’t change…
