Oh, I am so sorry to hear about your brother’s MRSA. I hope he will recover soon!
How does anyone get MRSA and what the heck is it?

  • Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

Please god tell me he is getting proper medical treatment and they have him on Septra DS – If that stuff gets in his elbow joint they might have to amputate his arm, no kidding.

Zelda, MRSA is a type of staph that is very resistant to most antibiotics. The MRSA bacteria only needs to enter a wound to fester. A bug bite, scratch, or any other entry past the skin is all it needs, and MRSA can be found almost anywhere nowadays, especially in peoples’ noses where it loves to hide out. There are a lot of people with MRSA on them or in their noses but don’t get the infection. I know all this because both I and my 2 year old daughter got MRSA infections. It was scary bc my daughter, who was 1 1/2 at the time, had it near her left knee cap, and it could have cost her her leg (she’s perfectly fine now, although she does have a scar on the back of her leg from the surgery where they cleaned it out.) It was definitely the most painful infection I’ve ever had.

He had a scratch on his elbow and it just pretty much blew up to this. He is in so much pain he can’t work or do anything. He has already had one skin graph, but it has never closed up. He does not have a strong immune system b/c of all of this.

    Whitney–

I’m so sorry your brother is going through that. But don’t loose hope. Even if he doesn’t respond to antibiotics, there is a new therapy emerging to treat resistant bacterial infections. It’s called Phage Therapy(pronounced Fage).

Instead of jump starting the immune system to produce anti-bodies like traditional Antibiotics do, Phages deliver a virus that is tailored to attack the specific strain of MRSA bacteria but not your brother’s healthy tissue. Phages are naturally occurring and are customized for individuals in the lab. Phage Therapy has been safely and effectively used since at least the 40s in Eastern Europe. It has a really fascinating history. I know it sounds too good to be true and somewhat exotic, but I’ve done a lot of research on it because we have had several long-term staff infections hit family members and my aunt was recently discovered to not have the ability to produce white blood cells (It’s really a miracle she’s survived to adulthood, but thankfully she’s getting unrelated treatment starting this week!).

Phage Therapy is just getting its roots in America, so your average physician is probably not familiar with it and may even have heard misinformation (you know how tight docs and pharmaceutical companies are–at least mine is). Thankfully in the last few years, information is spreading on the internet and entrepreneurs are bringing the technology to the US. There’s a good page about Bacteriophages on Wikipedia and hopefully YouTube still has the documentary about the discovery of Phages on it. I got a half a dozen results for Phage companies through Google. I believe one MRSA survivor even has their story about how Phage Therapy worked after all else failed on YouTube.

Please don’t write this off because it could really be a godsend for your brother. I have no financial interest in giving you this information, I just want to help spread the word (and kill the MRSA!). I would hate for your brother to suffer any longer than he has to or for him to possibly even loose his arm if the MRSA gets worse.

Okay, the public announcement is over. ;-)

Seriously, I wish you the best of luck with whatever treatment you guys go with!

OMG!! That looks so painful!! I hope he gets better soon! I have also heard good things about the bacteriophage therapy, Your brother should definitely at least ask about it. Keep us posted! :-)

I feel so bad for your brother. He must have an especially resistant strain of MRSA.

For the person who asked, MRSA is an acronym. It stands for Methicillin Resistant Staph. Aureus. That means that it’s a type of staph infection that has mutated and become resistant to the antibiotic methicillin (as well as many other antibiotics). We all have staph bacteria on our skin but sometimes if people get a cut in their skin the wound gets infected with staph that may or may not be MRSA.

I hope the specialist helps, and that if he isn’t already being treated by a wound care nurse that the specialist makes the referral. There are a lot of products out there that have success.

p.s.- I’ve been an RN for 22 years– I didn’t just copy and paste from wikipedia

Nasty and treatment is a challenge. We have pumped so many antibiotics into our people we have become immuned. Doctors aren’t always so quick these days to prescribe antibiotics for every little infection. Some old fashioned remedies will work just fine.

Speaking of old fashioned treatment, Whitney, talk to your brother and suggest he try using honey on his dressings. Honey is anaerobic “Anaerobic is a technical word which literally means without air (where “air” is generally used to mean oxygen)” And it also has a low water content. It will keep new MRSA bacteria from growing, and hopefully help kill the bacteria already existing, while the antibiotics do their job and not have to work overtime.
Make sure your brother uses fresh honey, and not the stuff that comes in the bear, or anything like that. You don’t want anything too processed because stuff like that is watered down, and overheated and blended.
I hope this helps, serious infections like that is nothing to screw with.

The really sad part about my brothers story is he is a veteran who served in Iraq for 19 months. He is getting absoutly no help from the VA! When he went to the e.r 2yrs. ago for this in december he had just started a new job, and the insurance didn’t start up until february, and this happend in december! Ya so we are having such a hard time trying to figure all that stuff out for him. He went to the specialist today and he was Shocked that they previously did a skin graph, on him w/ out even checking if the infection was in the bone, which the doc. thinks it is now. :( He goes in again tomorrow to get an MRI. If it is in the bone they will likley have to scrape the bone to get it all out and put in a pick line and just do IV fluids from home. He can’t work b/c he works construction. His bills have been pileing up and they have now started garnishing his checks. You would think someone who served our Country would get some help! And while he was over in Iraq he got T.B! So thats another reason his immune system sucks. But thanks for letting me vent a little its just so fusterating! Thanks everyone!

Hi: I’ve been a “lurker” at this site for awhile now but this unfortunate situation made me want to comment.

As my username indicates, I am in Canada but I’m not posting to initiate any sort of debate regarding universal healthcare and it’s pros or cons. Nor, am I wishing to make any comments regarding American healthcare. I just want to say to Whitney that I am so sorry for her brother and I send my best wishes for his full and complete recovery.

I also wanted to inquire whether your family considered (or maybe already have) speaking to your local elected official in your area? I am not knowledgeable about the American political system but in Canada, we have local MLA’s (Member of the Legislative Assembly) who always maintain an office within the geographical area of their constituents, as well as having one in Ottawa (our nation’s capitol). Again, only speaking to my experience, the majority of MLA’s are truly interested in helping their constituents and can often pull some pretty big strings to get things done. I’ve seen it done myself (not for me but for people I know) a few times. And if this is not possible, has your family maybe considered going to the media? I would think that if your brother’s story got out, people would be upset and maybe he would see more done to help him?

Anyway, sorry for the long comment. I promise they won’t all be this long.

P.S.: So glad to see both Halph Staph and APF are back.

Omg Whitney! I’m so sorry ur brother is suffering so horribly. I’m praying that the specialist will find a way to get rid of that nasty MRSA! Please let him know that the PTZ community is thnking about him and wishing him the best for a complete recovery. Also I know there are many of us on here that suffer from complicated medical issues too, so definitely know how stressful/scary it can be. Big hugs to u and your family!

Tell your brother to put honey on it. Honey is used on bed sores to help them heal. And it works. Raw honey is best but even a dr. will tell you that sometimes it is used to heal incisions. The pharmacy should have WoundHoney. Will also get rid of the MRSA.
