That bridge would make it easier to heal and cause less of a mark from putting the two sides back together.

I got a big hunk of wood stuck in my hand once in the same spot but not nearly as big as that one. It hurt like hell! I did it when I was trying to throw a piece of firewood into the woodstove. I wasn't paying attention and the corner of the piece of wood caught on the edge of the door to the stove. My hand slid down the cut side of the wood and voila! A splinter the size of a pencil. Pain meds are a good thing! (I had flashbacks watching this video)

Your certainly right Jack, we have admitted pts with wounds of that nature, They included the carpals and tendons ended up with referrals to the OP therapists. I just can't see why he couldn't break that piece of wood in half horizontally. On the other hand, maybe they enjoyed taking the long way around..LQL

It may be that it has gone through the muscle tissue. A large part of that area of the hand is muscle, and it creates problems if you cut it. I stuck a scalpel in my hand in roughly the same area when i was younger and it still occasionally aches when i use my thumb.

Vlood sweetheart, my first thought is IDIOT! would have been so much easier, and less stressful for the guy. fYI if there is ever a question that something like that has penetrated a major vessel, as much as it's against our nature. LEAVE IT IN! until medical help is available. I seen a child step on a nail, the father naturally pulled it out. Well, that nail penetrated an artery, it looked like old faithful! The nail was "plugging" the hole! wrap it in cold clean cloths, so it can't be seen, keep him calm as possible and off to the E.R. you go..

2 reasons I can think of... a) capillary blood supply, the more intact the better the healing; b) smaller scar, if the patient has keloid scarring issues, that location could hamper a lot of day-to-day activities.

That's the quick `n dirty reasons I can see, of course don't get me started talking details, I could bore you by volume 3.

Peace
