They had to re-cut the incision area, go deep and clean the infection out! I was in the hospital for a few days and had a PIC line in for a month! I guess mine was not able to be left alone? I wish I could have video taped my son popping a green bump back on my neck...it was thick, green and chalky. That was a sign of the infection and how my doc suspected cellulitus!!! In lay terms, this was not ripe enough for an i&d. The large amount of redness before the procedure announces that the lesion is still largely a cellulitis. You do not incise cellulitis. You let the immune system do its job, at the end of which you can slice and remove any remnant abscesses that don't resolve. The tissue is still just too "hot" to finagle with. You also get a much more satisfying popper if the lesion does finally resolve as an abscess >5mm in diameter. Look at this pt., it's not obvious that the lesion is big enough to call for i&d: conservative tx with warm soaks might work just as well. In other words, we might have a wee bit of surgical makpractice here. I just hope there was no bad outcome.
