He was not very gentle with that needle, and the scalpel looked a bit dull, but I do love the fact he cut the cyst open when he finished.

I agree folks, shoulda put that knife on the good ole leather strap!
Squirt, I believe sebum soaks up melatonin, dark skin=darker give, thats just a personal theory from working in the clinics. Could be darker too considering area cleanliness. The doc is fab!! he’s so in tune with us.. He actually cut that sac open!! How cool is that! My kinda guy..

Ok, a few things here…..1) Dr. J knows he’s got a fan club, it’s getting obvious……2) He’s obviously a Rick Springfield, Flock of Seagulls, Kenny G Fan – wonder if the music is on his “hold” on his office phone and 3) Holy cow that scalpel didn’t look sharp! You shouldn’t have to saw at skin with a scalpel. Yow!

In alot of animals, when you break open a cyst, or squeeze a cyst, it often comes out that dark grey color. A dermatologist told me that if we got to the cyst right away, the sebum would be light in color, but the longer it sits (sometimes years) it gets dryer, pastier, and darker in color.

Hey gliming, while I was watching the video and listening to his music I could not help but start to add words to it. “saving the world. 1 nose, 1 ear, 1 zit at a time”

WOW that took forever! I think it would have been faster to cut it with a butter knife. Still love the dude though.

You asked what that was? Well, if you check 1:30-2:00, it’s plain to see that what the doc removed from that guys face was….an EYEBALL! Heh, why not? They remove the “phantom twin’s” hair and teeth from pilonidal cysts all the time; so why not the same twin’s eye which had been patiently waiting in it’s little facial sac, trying to get to the light.

And the condition of the edged instruments? Yes, they were unconscionably and unprofessionally dull, leaving an unnecessary and ragged crater. But forget sharp or dull instruments, those things hadn’t even been WASHED, much less sterilized. Yech!

That “knife” or “scapel” has a name .. it called a Bard Parker. I know because my profession is in the dental field and I use a Bard Parker all the time. Bard Parker new sterile blades are like 20 cents each and I go through several each day. A new BP blade would float throught that tissue. I just don’t understand why he used such a dull one. Noone and I mean noone ever sharpens one, they are so cheap, you just unwrap another one.

mother E looks like you are getting a crush on Dr J, no wonder he does the best videos!!!!
I know I’ve said it here before but this Hospital is in India folks, actually southern India, and the cost of a scapel in America may only be 20cents, but translated into Indian Ruppies that may come out to $100.00 US.
Mostly the problem is accesability to proper and new equipment, certainly not ignorance of the equipment itself.
As well India is another country without universal health care! The only problem with that is that for the most part India is a 3rd world country where the average life expectancy is 37!

Well somebody give me his address so I can send him a couple of blades. How does he afford the $5000 endoscope he uses if he can’t buy blades?

Dr. J is brilliant! I was hoping we’d get a two-fer with that orange cotton in the dude’s ear, but alas. LOVE how he breaks the cysts at the end of his videos!

I’m glad that he opened it up so we could see inside; it would have been great if he had squeezed it though!!! He probably had us in mind when he did the surgery, and he knew that we would get a thrill from seeing inside. Did anyone think that maybe it wasn’t a dull blade but especially tough tissue? Plus, although Western doctors may have easy access to replaceable blades, regardless of the cost, it is very hard to even get a lot of the items in India that we take for granted.

KEWPHOTOG, that’s funny, maybe soon we’ll have our own Dr. J remix song to send him in appreciation. JUMBOB, that was NOT an eyeball, I’ve cut out many eyeballs in my life in my clinic and they don’t even REMOTELY look like that. That’s an ordinary old cyst. Thanks to Dr. J for his showmanship in getting out the cyst, and then cutting it and fluffing it for our enjoyment. Kudos.

*sigh* Ah, the difficulties of trying to be funny on the interwebs. Yes, gilming, I did understand that cyst wasn’t really an eye – I’ve never heard of a third eye in front of someone’s ear. I was merely playing with the way the cyst sort of LOOKED like some clouded sclera, iris and pupil. But don’t worry, I didbn’t actually think it was an eye. If for no other reason than that vile, disgusting gunk inside the cyst would have made a funky vitreous for an eyeball.

looking at this for about the 5th time. The top portion of it and an area to the left. Does it seem like the sack may have been weakening, getting ready to burst? That would have made a nasty little infection, if not caught. Do any of my knowledgeable friends have thoughts?

sad to say, but the doc falls in my estimation due to the blunt blade issue. he knows better and should do better. he’s the head of a 50-bed ENT hospital who participates in international conferences. he definitely knows better.

    why is it black inside?
also it seems that when people do it at home they leave less of a wound/scar potential
    that’s quite a large incision

Through the entire video I wanted to see what was inside:

Then Dr J comes through again and cuts it open for us at the end!

    YES!

I do agree with people saying that his scalpel wasn’t “sharp” but for a minor surface surgery like that, you don’t want your scalpel to be super sharp like a regular surgical #18 blade, he used a #10 blade, normal surface “scrapes”

I think perhaps its dull on purpose for a little more control…and safety…perhaps. This is super gross! COOL THOUGH!
