I have to admire the entrepreneurial spirit of these urban street ear cleaners.

‘Hmm. I need some fast cash, a little mad money. Hey! I know. I’ll set up on a street corner and clean the bird’s nests out of strangers’ ears! Maybe I can do a little soup business on the side…’

Just *kidding*. I tried to read up on it and came across a familiar claim. Does anyone know if it is true that part of the reason this business is common to East Asia is that the “dry type of ear wax found in persons of Asian extraction is particularly amenable to this type of removal, more so than the wet type of ear wax found in people of Caucasian or African origin” [wikipedia, "ear pick" entry]?

The entry also describes the ear cleaning act as one of “intimacy,” often between a mother and child… but, heck, that sounds too hinky, twisted, and sick to be true.

    Right?

Meh! Youse can’t keep a good prof down…

These always remind me of a tale my Mom tells from her childhood. She had decreased hearing ability in one ear and her mother took her to the doctor to check it out. Doc prods around in there, finally uses a syringe/water to rinse the ear, and out pops a ball of wax about the size of a pea. Mom said it was so hard that it actually bounced when it hit the floor. Alas, I have no such problem.

Actually, after the first bit of these, the last two would show up and I would watch them constantly…the third being my favorite. The thing I don’t understand is the consistency of the wax itself. It’s dry; not waxy at all. Whenever I clean my ears when is usually after a hot shower I get some yellow, no texture or anything, just basic yellow and maybe a darker tint if I get lucky.

But never had I seen “wax” in ears that peels off like a dry, sensitive, crunchy film. Where do I find these people? What do they eat? Do they not shower? I DON’T GET IT.

I LOVE this series, Vlood! It is nice to have it all together here! For some reason it fascinates me that someone could have all that in their ears for so long. It drives me nuts to have junk in my ears. Hubby and I go through lots of Q-tips… and yes, they work for us. I clean my ears after a warm shower where I wash my ears and usually get quite a bit of wax out every other day or so. 5 stars for the series!

    Hey Prof,

I can tell you that in Japan, ear cleaning is kind of a couple thing. A woman is seen as very loyal and dutiful if she cleans her husband’s ears. My Japanese wife won’t touch mine, but you see it on dramas and it’s a bit (and dwindling) of a cultural stereotype there.

Loved the first one with the vacuum. By the way, they sell machines in Japan where you can watch yourself as you pick your own earwax. They run for about $200 if memory serves.

My wife promised me one but alas, we moved to the U.S.

What I am wondering is is this anywhere near the ear drum because whatever it is that they are using to take it out with it looks like one wrong move and it could cause some serious damage.

    Glad you like it PPM

that’s what i figured lisa but i wasnt EXACTLY sure. i know that in certain parts of the world and the characteristics of their people are different and i always remember asians being a bit dryer. i kinda wish i had their ear wax; it seems easier. that and their hair is less likely to be greasy. im jealous.

Have any of you ever used ear candles? They are AWESOME! My left ear does not drain properly and I have always had a horrible time with ear wax build up until I found the ear candles. I’m telling ya….it is wicked how much wax you get out with these things! It is the size of a tapered candle, you put it in your ear and light the top of it on fire (you can not do this yourself, you need help)…..as the candle burns down, you cut off the part of the candle that has burned and once it burns down to about two inches, you snuff it out and remove the remaining candle. Now….you can either just throw it away, OR…..you can open it (it’s a bees wax candle, so it’s not solid)….and inspect what has been “sucked” out of your ear!!!! I do this about once a month, and on average there is about an inch to an inch and a half of wax that comes out the thickness of a pencil. I am not kidding…..you can get them at any GNC store, or places that sell herbal supplements and vitamins. And let me tell you, you can DEFINITELY hear better after, even if you don’t have a problem and it’s just a routine cleaning! YouTube has a lot of videos on ear candling if you want to watch it done, some of them are really funny….people actually have ear candle parties!

It’s the fact that this earwax has been pushed far in there and it starts to dry out because it’s too old. You’ve gotta be careful cleaning your ears, you should use peroxide and water really… not q-tips. It might seem like you’re just swabbing the ears but you’re really pushing bits of wax further in your ear where it will accumulate and the harsh chemicals from the bleached cotton on the q tips will dry out your ear wax.
