  • Without a doubt the single grossest, most disgusting thing I have ever seen on this site. I truly started dry heaving and thought I would lose it. What the hell was that?

  • That was a polyp. You can tell by the hair in it. Very gross.

  • *GAG* That is FOUL!
“…teratomas have been reported to contain hair, teeth, bone and very rarely more complex organs such as eyeball, torso,
hands, feet, or other limbs. The word teratoma comes from classical Greek and means roughly “monstrous tumor”.” Yeah, I’ll say.

  • Most likely a dermoid cyst ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dermoid_cyst ) , though it’s pretty huge. They can contain hair, teeth, eyes (wtf!?), nails, bone, etc. Really odd things. My grandmother had one removed from her ovary when I was in high school, apparently she had teeth in there.

  • It’s a teratoma. They often have hair and other things, like brain tissue and teeth, in them, because they come from germ cells.

  • I love the vids on here, but this one is over the top! What this is an egg that has started to develop without being fertilized. That was actually a brain that they cut open at the end. Sorry to be such a downer!

  • Thank you for another surprise jodi-40! It was very interesting. I’ve seen similar vids but none with that much liquid-ey pus! That was truly surprising to me.
I had two family members who had these types of things.
One of them got a big stomach but wasn’t pregnant, she had surgery and they got something like that out.
Another had all the symptoms of early pregnancy but her doc said she wasn’t; later she began cramping and bleeding and passed something (thru her vagina). They took it to the hospital for analysis and treatment for her of course. The mass she passed was full of hair, bones, etc but it wasn’t a baby. Weird.

  • OMG!!!

    WTF????

Ok so there’s hair, and teeth, and the DR.’s say it is NOT the beginning of a twin??
    So, WTF is it???????????????????????
    I don’t get it.
    Some one PLS explain…(?)

  • Wow! I really wish I didn’t just see that…

  • I think it was a twin that had been absorbed into another twin in utero. I think it was the brother or sister that never developed and was finally taken out thru surgery when the person became an adult. Thanks for the great post Jodi-40.

  • Teritoma ahhh yes a wild tumor full of hair and teeth. Niiiice one. I have yet to see full teeth yet…. anyone?

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0
  • Okay, remember when I said that the hydatid liver was the grossest thing I had ever seen…and I pointed to opening dermoid cysts as an example of something…challenging to do. As dermoids go, this one is not too bad. Rather little hair. I don’t see teeth. I don’t see eyes. (Yes, you want gross, open a few dozen dermoids during a pathology rotation and you WILL reconsider your career choice.)
What happens is a throwback to earlier patterns of cell proliferation. Normal humans (and mammals generally) are diploid organisms: 2 copies of each chomosome. Gamates are formed through meiosis, in which the cell has one copy of each chromosome. Two gametes unite (egg + sperm) to produce a zygote, which activates cellular pathways to start growing an embryo.

Sometimes, intelligent design being what it is, a gamete retained in the ovary has its proliferation pathway switched on. Only it does not have the proper complement of control genes, so it makes a mess. The cells inside are pluripotent, so you get a variety of cells. Men can get teratomas in their testicles, too, but the exquisite pain usually gets one to the ER sooner than a woman, whose genitals are located in the abdomen, where there is some room for growth.

There are whole phyla of organisms where the haploid cycle (the gametes) are the predominant form of the organism. That is why we carry around a genetic heritage that makes it possible for our genitals to kill or, or just make one melluvahess.
